Recipe: French Hot Chocolate with Cocoa and Cornstarch




Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp sugar (or to taste)
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Dark chocolate pieces (optional for extra richness)
  • Whipped cream or marshmallows (optional for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Cocoa and Cornstarch Mixture:

    • In a small bowl, mix the cocoa powder, cornstarch, sugar, and salt.
    • Add 1/4 cup of cold milk and whisk until smooth and lump-free.
  2. Heat the Milk:

    • In a saucepan over medium heat, warm the remaining 1 3/4 cups of milk until it’s hot but not boiling.
  3. Add Cocoa Mixture:

    • Stir the cocoa and cornstarch mixture into the warm milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps.
  4. Thicken the Mixture:

    • Continue stirring until the mixture begins to bubble and thickens slightly.
  5. Enhance the Flavor:

    • Add the vanilla extract and dark chocolate pieces (if using) and stir until fully melted.
  6. Serve:

    • Pour the hot chocolate into serving cups and top with whipped cream or marshmallows if desired.
